Can you imagine sleeping on your front porch because it was cooler than the inside of your home? Porches used to be more than just a home accent; they would offer protection from the sun and a shaded place to rest, socialize, and sometimes sleep.
Daytime errands and chores were often limited as much as possible during the sweltering heat, and things like cooking and baking weren’t done until the cooler evening hours. What a difference from our schedules today; even shopping was usually limited to after the sun went down!
