Memorial Day is Here

memorialday

If you’re sitting in your home reading this right now, you’re probably enjoying the comforts of either an air conditioner or a heater. How often do we take these things for granted? With Memorial Day approaching, it’s important to remember that the things we often take for granted would not be possible without the sacrifice of the brave men and women that fought for our freedom.

Starting as far back as the Civil War, we have remembered our fallen soldiers on Memorial Day. Without these honorable soldiers, the luxury of ACs and heaters would not be possible. These courageous people did not have the comforts we use everyday. On Memorial Day it’s important to pay homage to all of the people that have made the ultimate sacrifice to preserve our way of life!

Decoration Day’s Beginning

decorationdayMemorial Day, formerly known as Decoration Day, has long been a time for us to honor the men and women who fought and died for our freedom. Decoration Day came into practice before the Civil War even ended.

Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address is widely thought to be the most influential beginning. However, it was a few years after the war in 1868, when John A Logan declared May 30th to be a day to remember our fallen soldiers in the Civil War.

Fast forward to 1971, when Congress declared Memorial Day a Federal holiday. As the holiday would now fall on the last Monday of May, Memorial Day became the unofficial start to the summer. While the main focus of Decoration Day was to decorate the graves of our fallen soldiers with flowers and flags; we have now extended that to include barbeques, parades, and parties.

Honoring All of Our Armed Forces

armedforcesMemorial Day, while originally meant to honor those who fought and died in the Civil War, has become a national holiday to pay tribute to all the men and women in the armed forces who have died.

From the Civil War to World War II to Vietnam to the recent War on Terrorism, men and women have bravely made the greatest sacrifice to protect our way of life. Freedom and Democracy are two things that we should never take for granted.

As we enjoy the benefits of living in a free Democracy, it is so important to remember our armed forces. Our Memorial Day celebration is a commemoration of these men and women. As you hang flags, and plants flowers, remember that without their brave sacrifice, we would not have the many amazing liberties we have today!
