The Best Thermostat Temperature Settings for All Seasons

Ideal Thermostat Settings to Save you Money

Many people become impulsive when it comes to playing around with their home thermostats. But, you are severely affecting the cost of your monthly bill by doing so. When you set your thermostat at the right temperature throughout the year, you will save yourself a ton of money!

This blog will breakdown how to set your thermostat during the warm, cold, and empty house days. Not only will this help lower your energy costs, but also you’ll still get that ideal temperature you need for all-day comfort.

Thermostat Settings During Cold Months

cold monthsFor late Fall and Winter, the ideal temperature to set your thermostat at 70 degrees Fahrenheit. The temperature should remain at 70 degrees while you are at home, but it has been suggested that customers lower it while they are sleeping.

Reducing the temperature of your thermostat by 10-15 degrees for eight or more hours can greatly reduce your heating bill by 5-15%.

When you break that down even further, you are looking at a potential savings of 1% for every degree lowered over that eight-hour span. Don’t forget to layer up at home and take advantage of warm blankets to help keep the temperatures down as well.

Thermostat Settings During Warm Months

For late Spring and Summer, the ideal temperature to set your thermostat at 78 degrees Fahrenheit. When you are away, it is suggested that you either turn the thermostat off or raise the temperature even more. It is important to not waste money when you are not at home. Many thermostats can be programmed through an App or you can program it right on the thermostat itself.

It can easily be programmed to start cooling down the house shortly before coming home so that you can take advantage of the cool air as soon as you walk through the door. It is also not a wise decision to lower the temperature rapidly when getting home because of the unnecessary expenses that you will encounter.

Thermostat Settings When No One is Home

empty houseWhen no one is home for a long period of time, it would be a wise decision to turn off the heating/cooling system completely.

If you live in areas where cold temperatures can become extreme, you do not want your pipes to freeze, so shutting the thermostat off completely would not be a wise decision.

This would also be applicable only if you did not have pets or plants at home either. The winter months can be a little bit trickier in setting your thermostat at the right temperature.

But, if you are going to be gone for an extended period of time and do not want to shut off your thermostat, consider setting the temperature between 50-60 degrees Fahrenheit.

If your plumbing runs within the interior walls, 50 degrees would be a safe bet. If they are on the exterior wall, raising the temperature to 55-60 degrees would be acceptable.
